What is Datafund and how it work

Datafund project is a protocol and a distributed application (dApp) that guards personal data, provides safe storage and enables provable personal data exchange. Information is shared anonymized or on a need-to-know basis according to an agreement between exchanging parties.

As Datafund is a European based project (with global ambitions), it will be compliant with a new regulative in the EU that protects individuals — the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

The processing of personal data should be designed to serve mankind. Because of that we are embracing GDPR as it is one of the strictest privacy protection regulations globally that provides the path for individuals to reclaim their data. Moreover, once Datafund protocol is GDPR compliant, we estimate that other jurisdictions are quite easy to legally satisfy.

Only a decentralized solution puts the individual into control of her data while allowing censorship-proof exchange of data without intermediaries. Moreover, applying blockchain technology allows for creation of an "individual-centric" process that allows for unprecedented economic efficiency for all parties involved. Datafund protocol is built on Ethereum and Swarm with the intent to be blockchain and technology agnostic as much as needed.

What are datafunds?

Datafunds are a new form of personal data oracle that can form or connect to data markets. Organizations (data users) are incentivised to give data back to individuals and to participate in a fair and ethical exchange of data value. Contributors to a specific datafund are rewarded with intrinsic tokens of a receiving datafund.

MinMax data sharing principle

Personal data exposes the individual to outside influence and forces. Moreover, we can assume that in this environment, we have malicious actors. Therefore, individuals should minimize their exposure, share on the need-to-know basis, know who has data about them and how it is being used. This is the minimum personal data sharing principle.

Properly anonymized data does not expose the individual and such data can fuel many algorithms and services, and provide value to their operators. Anonymous data marketplaces where individual is in control what data gets offered, can provide a solution. Therefore, anonymized data should be shared as much as possible, contributing to various data sets (research, smart cities, health, product design, …) while maximizing revenues originating from personal data. This is the maximum anonymous data sharing principle.
By being aware of the above guideline, personal data exchange becomes meaningful and on the need to know basis while anonymous data can create more efficient economies and do social good.
